A/Prof Barnes was invited to present at this year's COAG Convention, an annual educational meeting held across Australia and New Zealand, delivering sessions to both the Nurses Group and the Advanced Trainee cohort. His presentation to the Advanced Trainees, addressing normal and abnormal paediatric haematology through case-based discussion, was very well received: 88% of attendees rated the session as extremely or somewhat relevant and useful to their training. Rethinking the Investigation of Vitamin B12 Deficiency [working title - please confirm]

A/Prof Barnes presented a session challenging conventional approaches to the investigation of vitamin B12 deficiency, encouraging general practitioners to further investigate patients with normal serum B12 levels where clinical suspicion remains high, and discussing the role of homocysteine testing in supporting diagnosis. Feedback from attendees was strongly positive, describing the session as engaging, clinically relevant to everyday general practice, and directly influential on their clinical approach, with several noting an intention to incorporate homocysteine testing into their own diagnostic practice as a result.
