Prof Stephen Opat is Director of Clinical Haematology at Monash Health, one of the largest haematology services in Australia, caring for a population of around 1.3 million. He is founder and chair of the Australasian Lymphoma and Related Diseases Registry, lead investigator of the Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance Lymphoma Flagship, and a Clinical Professor in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University.
Stephen trained in haematology at The Alfred and Austin Hospitals in Melbourne, followed by a fellowship in Cambridge, UK, researching Hodgkin lymphoma biology. In 2009 he spent six months at the BC Cancer Agency in Canada studying mantle cell lymphoma, and in 2018 he was a visiting professor at Stanford University studying deep sequencing of aggressive lymphoma.
He has been a principal investigator in over 60 clinical trials, mainly in lymphoid cancer, and in 2014 established a first in human and early phase haematology research unit at Monash Health. He has more than 150 peer reviewed publications, serves on many international scientific advisory boards on lymphoma and CLL, and has served as President of the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand. He has a strong interest in medical education, particularly in developing countries, and has lectured widely throughout the Asia Pacific region.
